  Priest of the Diocese of Saint Cloud Pastor of Our Lady of the Angels Church, Sauk Centre: 1883 Died: Gravestone states born 1853 Father Gamache, Early Minnesota Missionary, Dies Duluth, Minn. (AP) The Rev. Clement V. Gamache, 84, last survivor of the little band of missionary priests who first served northern Minnesota, died Sunday in St. Mary's Hospital where he had served as chaplain since 1921. As one of the pioneer priests of this section, Father Gamache traveled on foot from mission to mission years ago, establishing Catholic Churches. Born in Quebec, October 20, 1852, Father Gamache was educated at the Christian Brothers' high school there and entered the Québec seminary afterwards. He made his philosophical studies at Notre Dame, Ind., and then entered St. John's seminary at Collegeville, Minn., to study for the priesthood. He was ordained in 1880 and appointed rector at Melrose, Minn. He also served at Gentilly, Minn., Detroit Lakes, Minn., with Aitkin, Minn., as a mission; and at Grand Rapids, with Hibbing as a mission. He was appointed rector of the Church of the Blessed Sacrament in Hibbing, which he helped found. He remained there for 11 years and ws then transferred to Nashwauk with Keewatin as a mission, remaining in the capacity for nine years. In 1921, Father Gamache was appointed chaplain of St. Mary's hospital, serving until failing health compelled him to retire about three years ago.
