Frances L. Stokes, 86, formerly of Punxsutawney, died Thursday, March 25, 2010, in Beacon Ridge Manor, Indiana, Pa. Born April 4, 1923, in Big Run, she was a daughter of the late George A. and Kathryn (Monroe) Shirey. She was a member of St. Peter's United Church of Christ, Punxsutawney, a member of Catherine Pifer Guild at the church, and a member of Elk Run Fire Company Auxiliary. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, George Stokes, whom she married July 12, 1941, and who died in December 1990; sister, Helen Brown; four brothers, Robert, William, Fred and Dean Shirey; an infant son, George Edward Stokes; and daughter-in-law, Helen G. Stokes. She is survived by two daughters, Rebecca Rumgay and husband, Gary, of North Point, Pa., and Susan McKie and husband, the Rev. Dr. Robert S., of Greensburg; a son, Gary Stokes, of Indiana, Pa.; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Friends will be received from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday in the DEELEY FUNERAL HOME, 33 Hillcrest Drive, Punxsutawney. The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday in St. Peter's United Church of Christ with the Rev. Dr. Robert S. McKie and the Rev. Mary Morton co-officiating. Burial will be in Circle Hill Cemetery. The family suggests that memorials be made to St. Peter's United Church of Christ, the local ambulance service, ATA Bus or the American Cancer Society.
