Deceased Name: Lewiston lawmaker dies at 82 Albert Gamache served as top U.S. Senate aide
State Rep. Albert P. Gamache, D-Lewiston, a top aide to former U.S. Sen. William D. Hathaway, died at his home Monday night after a long illness. He was 82.
Gamache, a Lisbon native, served for 14 years as Hathaway's administrative assistant in both houses of Congress. He later worked for the U.S. Department of Labor.
Because of his age, Gamache was regarded as the dean of the Maine House. He was re-elected in November to a fourth two-year term.
Speaker G. Steven Rowe said Gamache will be remembered for his remarkable record of public service and unfailing affection for the people of Lewiston.
"Al seldom rose to speak on the floor of the House; but when he did stand and raise his microphone, his quiet presence commanded the attention of the House. Colleagues listened to his words, knowing they would invariably be thoughtful and well-reasoned. His voice carried weight," Rowe said.
Gamache is survived by three sons and a daughter.
A funeral Mass was scheduled for 9 a.m. Friday at Sts. Peter and Paul Church in Lewiston.
