GARTHWAIT, Donald I.
Donald I. Garthwait, 77, of Valley Street, Willimantic, passed away Monday afternoon, (July 26, 2004) at the Liberty Specialty Care Center in Colchester, with his loving family by his side. Born October 27, 1926, in Waterbury, he was a son of the late Paul and Lillian (Adkins) Garthwait. He was a proud veteran of World War II, serving with the U.S. Army. Later he became a life member of the VFW Post 1724 in Willimantic. On Jan. 31, 1948, he wed the former Virginia Wells in Waterbury. Together, they shared 35 years of marriage before she predeceased him on Oct. 24, 1983. Mr. Garthwait was a truck driver for many years and retired from the Maintenance Dept. of Electric Boat in Groton. He was president of the Eastern Hills CB Club Charity Benefits and was former President of the Tenant Association for the Wilbur Cross Apartment complex. He is survived by eight children and their spouses, Marilyn and Leonard Bemont, Donna and Daniel Sherman, Donald and Lillian Garthwait and Ronald Garthwait, all of Willimantic, Joan and Rick Smith of Sterling, James and Darlene Garthwait of Salem, Linda and Donald Gamache of Erwin, NC and John and Joann Garthwait of Cordsville, SC; two sisters, Mary Kablick of Lebanon and Ruth Blay of Chaplin; a brother, William Garthwait of So. Windsor; 21 grandchildren; 33 great grandchildren; and numerous extended family members and friends. In addition to his wife, he was predeceased by a daughter and son-in-law, Lori and George Macha; and a brother, Kenneth. Friends may call Thursday, from 6-8 p.m. at the Aurora-McCarthy Funeral Home, 167 Old Hartford Road, Colchester. The funeral will assemble 10:30 a.m. Friday, at the funeral home before an 11 a.m. Chapel Service. Interment, with full Military Honors rendered by the Antique Veterans of Colchester, will follow in the New Lebanon Cemetery. The family would like to extend their heartfelt gratitude to the staff of Liberty Speciality Care for the loving and compassionate care given to Donald.
