Fernando Jorge Dias, age 80 years, a resident of Thunder Bay, passed away peacefully in the Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre on Saturday, September 6, 2014 in the presence of his family. Fernando Jorge Dias, aged 80, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on September 6, 2014 after a lengthy illness. He was born October 7, 1933 in Sao Jorge, Azores. As a young man, Fernando worked as a tuna fisherman on the Atlantic Ocean. Off season, he began his career as a road builder and tile worker. His work can still be appreciated in his hometown of Urzelina and continues to demonstrate his passion for doing every job with precision and excellence. He married the love of his life, Aida Maria Silveira, in March, 1957. Seeing the potential for his growing family, he brought her and his two sons to Canada in October, 1965. In Canada, he worked in construction and took pride in the skill he developed for paving roads. He spent many years working for Hacquoil Construction eventually retiring from Towland Hewitson. Despite long summer hours, he still found time to nurture a large garden and enjoyed the family competition to grow the largest tomatoes and ripen the largest grapes. Once he retired, he and Aida were able to regularly return to the Azores to reconnect with family and friends. Every action he took was done with a mind to provide for his family. He exhibited his love by chauffeuring, chopping wood and liberally handing out advice meant to better his children's lives. Fernando's legacy will live on in the many stories and special phrases that will be shared and repeated throughout the years by his family. Fernando is survived by his wife, Aida, of 57 years; son, Fernando (Eileen) and their children David (Victoria Hayward) of Edmonton, Nathan (Angela Lam) of Toronto and Emily (Paul) Pichette of Regina; son, Roy (Jo-Lynne) and their daughter Jorja; daughter, Isabel (Rick) Gamache and their daughter Sarina; son, John (Lisa Hampton) and his son John Paul; son, Victor and his children Kaleb and Kasey. He is also survived by numerous siblings, nieces and nephews living in Europe, the U. S. A. and throughout Ontario. The family would like to extend their gratefulness for the care, respect and kindness received by the doctors, nurses and staff in a wide variety of departments at Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre: in particular Dr. Boake and those in the Renal unit.
