Rolande Denise Heffernan (1945-2008) It is with great sadness that we announce the death of Rolande Heffernan (nee Gamache), 63, on Friday, November 14th, 2008 in Toronto of complications from encephalitis of undetermined cause. Born in St. -Marcel, Que. on Jan 2, 1945, Rolande was the 15th of 16 children. She leaves her loving husband Joe Heffernan, siblings Rita (Caron), Julien, Jean Paul, Benoit, Armand, Antoine, Jeanette (Pelletier), Andre, Monique (Pelletier), Noella and Fernand, parents-in-law Gerald and Geraldine Heffernan, sisters-in-law Clare, Ginny, Helen, Jeanne-Mance, Lise, Normande, Shelagh, Teresa, Thérèse, Tracy and two Beatrice, brothers-in-law Alyre, Edgar, Lucien and Mark, plus 70 nieces and nephews and more than 100 grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by her parents Adalbert and Elisa Gamache, brothers Gerard, Alphonse, Marcel and sister Cecile (Pelletier). Rolande grew up on a farm near St.-Marcel and began teaching at a one-room schoolhouse in Ste. -Félicité. She moved to London, Ont., Where she taught Joe to go to school. She continued her career at Orde Street Junior Public School and other schools within the Toronto District School Board. Rolande's favorite hobby was helping out at her family's sugar bush in Quebec and sharing the maple syrup with her wide network of friends and family in Toronto. She enjoyed quilting, cooking and tennis at the Leaside Tennis and Toronto Cricket clubs. We will miss Rolande's skill in the kitchen, especially her famous chocolate maple syrup cake. We would like to give special thanks to the Critical Care Unit at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center for their excellent care and diligence during the six weeks Rolande was in hospital. Viewings will be held at Funeral Home Claudius Lavoie & Son, 49 Foyer, St. Pamphile, Que. from 7-10 p.m. on Wednesday, November 19th and 12-2 p.m. on Thursday, November, 20th. Father Maurice Gagnon, the priest who married Rolande and Joe 36 years ago, will conduct a funeral mass at the Catholic church in St. Pamphile at 2 pm on Thursday. The mass will be followed by the St. Matthew Cemetery. She died at Sunnybrook Hospital as a result of encephalitis of undetermined cause. Born in St-Marcel de L'Islet on January 2, 1945, Rolande was the 15th of 16 children. She is survived by her beloved husband Joe Heffernan; his brothers and sisters: Rita (Caron), Julien, Jean-Paul, Benoit, Armand, Antoine, Jeannette (Pelletier), André, Monique (Pelletier), Noëlla and Fernand, his in-laws Gerald and Geraldine; his brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law: Clare, Ginny, Helen, Jeanne-Mance, Lise, Normande, Shelagh, Teresa, Therese, Tracy, 2 Beatrice, Alyre, Edgar, Lucien, and Mark, more than 70 nephews and nieces and more than 100 great nephews and nieces. Before her death, her parents Adalbert and Élisa Gamache, her brothers Marcel, Gérard and Alphonse, her sister Cécile (Pelletier). Rolande grew up on the family farm in St-Marcel and began her teaching career at a high school in Ste-Félicité. As soon as she had accumulated enough money to buy a car, she moved to London Ont. where she taught French in a primary school and she met Joe there. She continued her career at Orde Street Junior Public School and other schools in the Toronto area's Teaching District. Rolande's favorite pastime was to help her family at the sugar shack and share the syrup with her wide range of friends and family in Toronto. She enjoyed making quilts, cooking and playing tennis at Leaside Tennis and Toronto Cricket Clubs. We will miss his culinary skills, especially his famous chocolate cake and maple syrup. In particular, we would like to thank Sunnybrook Hospital's intensive care unit for the excellence of their care and attention during the six weeks Rolande has been there.
