The Daily Mining Gazette, Houghton, MI June 24, 1934: ALPHONSE GAMACHE, HIGHLY RESPECTED L'ANSE MAN, DIES Alphonse Gamache, highly respected and beloved citizen of L'Anse, passed away at his home on Railroad St. at 5 o'clock Saturday morning surrounded by his sons and daughters and their families. Mr. Gamache was 74 years of age, having been born in the village of St. Cyrile, Quebec, Canada. When 19 years of age he journied to Michigan, stopping at L'Anse and remaining here four years making his home with Mr. and Mrs. J. B. Belanger, parents of T. G. Belanger of L'Anse, who kept one of the first hotels in those days. After remaining four years he went east to New Hampshire to meet his sweetheart, Miss Apoline Bouley, who also was a native of St. Cyrile, Canada. They were married in New Hampshire July 1, 1883, and came to L'Anse by boat to Detroit and by stage and rail to the town he had lived in since.Mre. Gamache died here about 10 years ago. To this union were born 12 children, 6 boys and 6 girls, 7 of whom are now living. They are the Rev. Fr. Gabriel Gamache of DePere, Wis.; Roger D. Gamache, Detroit; Mrs. Paul Wells, Detroit; Mrs. Henry King, Iron Mountain; Mrs. Henry Fournier, L'Anse; Mrs. John Huot, L'Anse; Miss Stella Gamache at home. Fourteen grandchildren and three great grandchildren comprise the immediate family. Mr. Gamache was an experienced land cruiser and had worked for all the different land owners in Baraga and adjacent counties. He at all times enjoyed the respect and esteem of his employers. The funeral will be held from Sacred Heart church Tuesday morning at 9 o'clock. Final arrangements are not complete.
