  Henry Louis Jean-Baptiste King Henry was born in 1895,the third child of Peter Eugene and Josephine (Duquette) Kingiin Pelkie, BARAGA, Michigan. His father owned the farm they lived on and Henry grew up doing normal farm chores the the other boys in the area did. Being that the Pelkie area was populated mostly with Finns, Henry became fluent in the Finnish language as well as the French spoken by his parents and the English spoken at school. Henry didn't finish school before he went to work full-time. In 1918, Henry met Aurora Emma Gamache through mutual friends and he began to see her regularly,eventually marrying her on May 27th,1919. After marrying, they moved to Hubbell, Michigan where Henry worked at the Hecla Steel Plant. By the end of 1920, they moved to Iron Mountain where Henry took a job as a painter with the Ford Motor Company. Heemerged as a security agent for the company in it's efforts to keep the union from organizing their employees. It was this experience, in addition to his superior skills as an arbiter, that prompted hi to take the job of Chief of Police for Kingsford, Michigan in 1937. He was known as a fair and stern police chief and rarely was there a negative opinion of his expressed, even by those people whom he had locked up. Henry enjoyed working in his garden as his favorite pasttime. He grew tomatoes, peppers and beans and sometimes helped Aurora preserve them in jars. Henry did not drink alcohol often but when he did, he liked to do it heartily and outside of his jurisdiction so as not to jeopardize his job. Henry died in 1958 at the age of 62 of a heart attack.   [S5] Obituary. Iron Mountain News August 4, 1958 Page 2 Henry King Died Today in Hospital Henry L. King, 62, chief of the Kingsford Police Department for the past 21 years and a member of the force for 25 years, died at 7:30 this morning in the Dickinson County Memorial Hospital. Chief King suffered a heart attack at his home at 8 last evening. Chief King, who resided at 432 Osage Street, Kingsford, was born December 16, 1895 at Pelkie, Mich. He came to Kingsford 38 years ago and worked for 11 years for the Ford Motor Company in factory service and as a painter. He later became a member of the Kingsford Police Department and in 1937 was promoted to chief of the department. Chief King was a member of the Upper Peninsula Law Enforcement Association, the Michigan Association of Police Chiefs and the Holy Name Society of the Queen of Peace Church. He leaves his wife, Aurora; three sons, Byron of Oshkosh, Wis.; Lawrence, of Cadillac, and Gabriel, of Milwaukee; two daughters, Mrs. John Maddente and Mrs. Wallace Vanness of Milwaukee; three brothers, Clifford King, of Hubbell; E.E. King, of Detroit, and Alden King, of Jackson; five sisters, Mrs. Patrick Campeau, of L?Anse; Mrs. William Demars, of Port Huron; Mrs. Dona Neault, of Detroit; Mrs. William McKay, of Brigham City, Utah; and Mrs. Leona Bouchard, of Tawas City, Mich., and eight grandchildren. Friends may call at the Rochon Funeral chapel beginning at 7 Tuesday night. Services will be held at 8:30 Thursday morning at he chapel and at 9 at the Queen of Peace Church. Rev. Fr. Joseph Gondek, pastor, will officiate at the solemn requiem mass. Burial will be in Cemetery Park. Members of the Knights of Columbus will recite the rosary at 7:30 Tuesday night at the funeral chapel. Father Gondek will recite the parish rosary at 8 Wednesday night at the funeral chapel.
