NEW BEDFORD -- John D. Townley Jr., 89, of New Bedford died Wednesday, May 15, 2002, at Sacred Heart Home after a brief illness. He was the widower of Gertrude R. (Gamache) Townley.
Born in New Bedford, he was the son of the late John D. Townley Sr. and Minnie (Meadows) Townley.
Mr. Townley was formerly employed as an inspector for J.C. Rhodes.
He was a member of the St. Vincent de Paul Society, Hazelwood Bowling and Recreation Club, Union of Prayer St. Anne Sodality and the Arthritis Foundation.
He was a communicant of St. Anne?s Church, New Bedford.
Survivors include a daughter, Ann Verissimo, and her husband, Edward, of Acushnet; a son, John Townley, and his wife, Katherine, of Dartmouth; four grandchildren, Matthew Verissimo of Boston, Timothy Townley of Washington, D.C., Martha Townley of New York City, and Kevin Verissimo of Acushnet; and several nieces and nephews. He was the brother of the late James D. Townley, Milton D. Townley and Norman D. Townley.
His funeral Mass will be at 9 a.m. Saturday at St. Anne?s Church. Burial will be in Sacred Heart Cemetery No. 2.
