SILVERTON - Fred Dettwyler, 76, peacefully passed away much too soon. Freddie was born on October 20, 1934 to Karl and Lydia (Stadeli) Dettwyler in Silverton, the fourth of ten children; survived by brothers Rudolph, William, Bob, Sam, and Bernie, and sisters Marie Jensen, Fran Baxa, Alice Schurter, and Arlene Gamache. He graduated in 1948 from Brush Creek School and lived his entire life in the Silverton area. He shared wonderful memories of his childhood enriched by good times and good people.
Freddie married Barbara Fields on June 2, 1956 and together they raised five children who meant the world to him. He felt very blessed with the arrival of each of his children, grandchildren and most recently, great-grandchild. Freddie was a devoted family man. Family was extremely important to him and he always enjoyed anytime he could get together with his large extended family and friends.
Freddie started working at a young age, was an extremely hard worker, and took great lengths to make sure his family was well provided for. He was very talented and good at everything he did, teaching himself how to proficiently operate all types of heavy equipment including large trucks and trailers, catepillars, trackhoes, and roadgraders. He had a very special place in his heart for his farm in Central Oregon and so enjoyed the times he could be there with friends and family, especially his children and grandchildren.
He was a strong man with great determination, who always kept a positive attitude and never complained or gave up, even at the very end. He was a faithful friend, loving father and devoted husband, who was soft spoken, gentle and caring. Those of us lucky enough to have known Freddie will have many happy stories to treasure and recall. The legacy he created will last a lifetime.
He is survived by his loving wife Barbara of 55 years; sons Ric and Rod; daughters Mona Wickline, Sonja Dettwyler-Gwin, and Paula McKinley, 16 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild.
Viewing and visitation will be held at Fred & Barbara's home on Thursday from 2-9 pm and Friday from 4-8 pm. The funeral service will be held at the Silverton First Christian Church on Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 1 p.m. Burial will be at the Bethany Cemetery. Arrangements by Unger Funeral Chapel.
The family is very grateful for the loving care provided by the Salem Hospital and Drs. Richard Wilson (and staff), Earl VanVolkinburg and Robert Larson.
