  Died: It seemed that everyone, everywhere knew ?Ed!? The Belmont bus driver, the Boston MBTA subway attendant, the Harvard Square barber, the Cape Cod cashier. Every restaurant waiter, waitress, host and hostess, random people walking by on any given sidewalk and people begging for money on the street. Ed engaged everyone in conversation, and laughter. He was a calming influence in any moment of emotion and the person everyone would call when in need. Ed was also an artist. A Boston architect by trade, but a talented cartoonist by hobby. He painted cartoon wall murals for homes and his college, while always creating cartoon cards for his family and friends. He loved to learn and had tremendous gratitude for his GI Bill college education. Edward James Gamache was a country boy from New Hampshire with French Canadian roots who went off to war in Italy and France destined to experience atrocious things. But all I ever heard him say about those years was, ?There is nothing more beautiful in this entire world than North Africa.? On the day of his funeral wake outside Boston there were hundreds who attended with long lines of people out the door and around the corner. People were in utter disbelief he had died so young and it seemed that everyone had an ?Ed Gamache? story to share with me. At the time I didn?t understand what all that meant, but now I do. My father, a conundrum at times and a man who made his share of mistakes but ultimately a mentor who inspired me with his gifts more than he will ever know.
