Aime Leonard Andre Gamache
His family announces the peaceful passing into eternal rest of their beloved patriarch, Aim (Papa), on September 19, 2024, at his home in Storrs, peacefully surrounded by loved ones. Aim was born on October 18, 1946, to Welley and Serene (Desautels) Gamache in Willimantic.
Aim leaves behind his cherished wife, Sue, his adored children: Erica Gamache and Jeff Meyer of Norwich, Bryan and Christine Gamache of Columbia; and the lights of his life, his treasured grandchildren: Aiden, Mara, Karl, Connor, and Mackenzie. He is also survived by his siblings, Blanche Pracukowski, Doris and Ronald Neff; countless nieces and nephews; and many special extended family members in both Canada and the U.S. Aim was predeceased by his brother, Gene Gamache, and brother-in-law, Ed Pracukowski.
Aim attended St. Mary's Grammar School, Windham High, and A.I. Prince Tech. In 1967, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam and Germany. During his military service, he shifted from carpentry to plumbing, a skill he honed after obtaining his CT Master Plumbing Contractor license. He worked for ten years in residential plumbing before spending the next 35 years in commercial plumbing and heating at Windham Hospital. Through continuing education, he earned additional CT licenses for sprinkler installations, braising and the safe handling of medical gases. Aim was recognized with numerous awards and letters of commendation for his excellence, work ethic, and safety practices. Known as the "goodwill ambassador" of Windham Hospital, he was always ready to lend a helping hand with a smile, asking, "What can I help you with?"
In retirement, Aim remained active, dedicating his skills to volunteering at the First Congregational Church of Coventry. He served at Foodshare, handled repairs, rehabilitated the church's mission apartments, and assisted with oversight of the significant repair to the collapsed sanctuary ceiling, continuing his service until he retired from the Board of Trustees.
Aim's legacy of kindness, volunteerism, gardening, and loyalty to family and friends will be cherished forever. He created lasting memories while boating, water skiing, and knee boarding on Coventry Lake, performing daredevil stunts at Lake Quaddick, and enjoying canoeing on Eagleville Lake. His love for adventure extended to whacky motorcycle rides, car shows, swap meets, and parades in the family owned 1932 Plymouth roadster he restored. Vacations were often spent by the water, where beachfronts, waterfronts, or harbors provided his ideal relaxation. He would joke that all he needed to pack was a toothbrush and his Channel Locks!
The family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to the caregivers at Saint Joseph's Living Center and Windham Hospital. We are especially grateful for the time he spent with Nataliya, Amber, Nancy, and Carol.
In lieu of flowers, please consider memorial donations in his name to either Windham Hospital or the Building Fund at the First Congregational Church of Coventry.
Arrangements are as follows: Family and friends are invited to remember Aim at Johnson Fellowship Hall, 1171 Main Street, Coventry, on Friday, September 27th, from 5 to 7 PM. A funeral service will be held the following morning at First Congregational Church of Coventry, 1171 Main Street, on Saturday, September 28th, at 10 AM (please meet at the church).
