Longtime Alaska resident, Lydia May Gamache, 89, died Oct. 30, 1994, at Providence Hospital.
A visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Wed-nesday with Rosary at 7 p.m. at Evergreen Memorial Chapel, Downtown. Burial will take place next week at the Bellevue Cemetery in Adams, Mass.
Mrs. Gamache was born Sept. 15, 1905, in Adams, to Walter and Nancy Fields Anthony. She married Nelson Gamache on Oct. 15, 1924, at Hoosick Falls, New York.
Over the years she worked in the cotton mill and in a laundry/dry cleaners in Adams. In 1964, she made a summer trip to Alaska to visit her sons and their families. She returned to Massachusetts and the next summer loaded a pick-up truck with her belongings and drove the Alaska Highway to Anchorage, where she has resided since.
In Anchorage she worked at the Providence Hospital laundry and for Snow White Cleaners.
She retired in 1970 and began baby-sitting and house-sitting for many Anchorage families on a regular basis. She was fondly known as "Grandma" to those families as well as her own 16 grandchildren, several great-grandchildren and many friends.
Her family said, despite the fact that she had been ill off and on for the past few years she was fiercely independent and continued to live in her own residence until being admitted to the hospital a few days ago.
Mrs. Gamache is survived by her sons and daughters-in-law, Walt and Pat of Soldotna, Clarence and Angelline of Anchorage, and Norman of North Adams, Mass. Her husband preceded her in death in 1947.
