EDWIN A. MONETTE
L'ANSE - Edwin A. Monette, 71, of L'Anse, died Saturday night at the Veterans Hospital, Iron Mountain.
He was born in Houghton, Sept. 17, 1889, and had resided in L'Anse since 1924. As a young man he played professional hockey, was a member of the first hockey team performed in Houghton in 1901 and was a member of the first hockey team in Marquette in 1923. He was a veteran of World War 1 having served with the army overseas in active duty. Mr. Monette was a member of the Sacred Heart Church, the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He was married to the former Stella Gamache, June 17, 1936 at the St. Joseph Shrine, West DePere, Wis., by the later Rev. Fr. Gabriel Gamache, O. Fream, his brother-in-law.
Surviving are the widow, three sisters, Mrs. Elza Opie of Hancock, Miss Cora Monette of Houghton, Mrs. Ethel Masta of Royal Oak, five brothers, James, Irving, Walter, and Roy, all of Houghton and Claire of L'anse., and several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday morning at 9 a.m. at the Sacred Heart Church. Burial will be in the Evergreen Cemetery where military rites will be conducted.
Rosary will be recited at the Swanson Funeral Home, L'Anse Tuesday evening at 8 p.m. Friends may begin calling at the funeral home this evening.
